Emporia Farmers Market, a brief history of its origins by Roger Heineken
Timeline:
1982: Emporia Farmers Market began with one dozen vendors; total sales of $4,789
1982-1984: Market was held in the parking lot at 5th Avenue and Merchant
1985: Market was held at the Lyon County Fairgrounds
1986: Market moved to current location at parking lot on Merchant, between 7th and 8th Avenues
2002: 60 vendors, total sales of $49,070
2006: collective sales of all market vendors totaled $56,215
2007: Colletive sales of all market vendors totaled $56,629
2008: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $75,860
2009: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $87,948.
2010: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $90, 064
The market added indoor winter markets, November 2010 through April 2011, thanks to a generous gift from the Emil Babinger Charitable Trust. Markets took place once per month at 701 Commercial Street.
2011: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $92,940
The second season of Indoor Winter Markets began in November 2011, held twice per month at 701 Commercial. Markets moved to the Emporia Humanitarian Center in December 2011.
2012: The market celebrated 30 years of operation and collective sales of all market vendors was $101,688. This was the 5th record breaking market year in a row! A total of 64 vendors registered with the market in 2012. 2012 included the top 3 markets in our 30 year history. On June 30, there was an all-time record breaking market of $4,034. That record was broken twice in the month of July; 7/7 = $4,334 and 7/14 = $4,171.
2013: The market passed $100,000 in sales for the second year in a row. Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $101,091. Record months at the market in 2013 were August, November and December.
2014: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $103,112 - another record breaking year for the market.
2015: Collective sales of all market vendors totaled $102,377. Indoor Winter Markets continued to take place twice per month, and returned to downtown Emporia, 701 Commercial, in November of 2015. A record breaking 70 vendors participated in 63 markets in 2015.
